Registration: Frequently Asked Questions

-Do I need a current membership in order to register my equine?

  • Yes, the owner of the equine must be a current year member in order to register.

-Can I email my completed registration application, outcross papers (if applicable), membership application (if applicable) and photos?

-Do I have to use my equine's registered name from their other breed papers?

  • No, you may choose a name that differs from their outcross papers if you wish.

-What are outcross papers?

  • Outcross papers are your equine's papers with another association such as APHA, AQHA, ApHC, etc. For a full list of accepted outcross registries visit the PtHA® rulebook. Outcross registries not listed will be considered on a case by case basis.

-I'd like my horse be registered under a joint membership with two (or more) names. Does every person need to sign the registration application?

  • Yes, on brand new registrations every individual listed must sign as owner on the registration application.

-How long will it take for me to receive my registration/transfer/lease?

  • Please allow 4-6 weeks processing time from the date of receipt in the office, unless rush fees are paid.

-My APHA registered horse is registered in their color registry under the RG-070 rule/DNA rule. Will they be registered in the color registry for PtHA®?

  • PtHA® does not honor APHA's DNA Color registrations. If the horse does not have white hair with underlying pink skin somewhere on their body in the qualifying zone, they will be placed in PtHA's® solid registry.

-What needs to be submitted in order for the 4H/FFA discount to be applied?

  • Proof of current 4H/FFA membership to be included with the registration must include three things: Name of the organization, name of the youth and that they are current for the year that the registration is being submitted.
  • The equine must be in the Youth's ownership alone, the equine cannot be owned by a parent or legal guardian for the discount to apply.
  • The 4H/FFA discount can only be applied to brand new registrations. It cannot be applied to transfers, leases, rush fees or membership costs.

-What is a horse/pony/utility type and do I have to choose one?

  • Every horse, pony and utility that is registered must have a type designated. Type is based on breeding and/or conformation characteristics. Only miniature horses are exempt from having a type.
  • Stock Type: The Stock type Pinto is of predominantly Quarter and Paint breeding and conformation.
  • Hunter Type: The Hunter type Pinto is of predominantly Thoroughbred and approved European Warmblood breeding and conformation.
  • Pleasure Type: The Pleasure type Pinto is of predominantly Arabian, Andalusian and/or Morgan breeding and conformation.
  • Saddle Type: The Saddle type Pinto is of predominantly Saddle, Andalusian, Hackney or Tennessee Walking Horse breeding and conformation, displaying high head carriage and the animated, high action of these breeds.
  • Gypsy Type: The Gypsy type Pinto is of predominantly Gypsy Cob or Vanner breeding, displaying a heavy build, and short to moderate frame.
  • Drum Type: The Drum type Pinto is either a full-blood Draft breed or Gypsy horse crossbreeding with other draft type breeds. They will display a larger, taller frame than the Gypsy type.

-My equine already has outcross papers, do I need to complete the breeder's certificate?

  • No, if your equine is already registered with another association you may leave the breeder's certificate blank.

-When do I need to complete the breeder's certificate?

  • If your equine does not have outcross papers, but you would still like the pedigree recorded on the certificate, the breeder's certificate will need to be completed and signed by the sire and dam owner(s) at the time of breeding. If the sire and/or dam are registered with another association, copies of their certificates must accompany the registration application unless they are already PtHA® registered. A breeder's certificate will only be accepted if it is completed in full. Partial or incomplete breeder's certificates will result in an Undocumented registration.

-My equine's parents are not registered with PtHA®, can my equine still be registered?

  • Yes, an equine's parents do not need to be registered with PtHA® in order to be eligible for registration.

-My equine does not have outcross papers and I do not know who the sire & dam are and/or I cannot get a completed breeder's certificate. Can my equine still be registered?

  • Yes, as long as the equine is not an undocumented horse stallion, they can be registered as Undocumented. The breeder information will be left blank and the pedigree will read as "unknown". The pricing for an Undocumented registration can be found in the fee schedule on the registration application. The per age fee(s) is for documented/papered equine only.

-Do I need to send photos of my equine in order to be registered?

  • Yes, all new registrations must be accompanied by photos of the equine. The required photos are: a full front view, a full back view, left side view and right side view. No parts of the horse should be cut off or obstructed. If the equine's mane and/or tail is braided, banded or wrapped, those need to be taken out for the photos so the mane & tail hair hang naturally.
